Birding at Avery’s Pond

This is a Folsom Lake SRA event. Registration is required.

Have you ever seen our only aquatic songbird, the American Dipper?  Join State Park Interpreter Nicole Barden in a search for this unique bird, as we walk to and just beyond Avery’s Pond.  Along this slow-paced bird walk, we will also be on the lookout for winter visitors as well as year-round residents including Western Bluebirds, Say’s Phoebes, Rock Wrens, Herons, Bald Eagles, and others!

The trail follows the North Fork of the American River, giving us beautiful vistas of the water.  We will stop at the pond for a chance to explore the area, before continuing farther to a fast stream, where an American Dipper has been spotted in the past!

This walk will be about 3.5 miles out and back along a narrow, unpaved trail.  The trail has one very steep section at the beginning, but most of it is relatively flat beyond that section.  There are bathrooms available (no water) at the parking lot before and after the walk.

Come ready to learn and share your natural history knowledge with the group!
